Mulled “Wine”

The pomegranate juice and balsamic vinegar really replicate the fruity, acidity of red wine, and the star anise, cinnamon, and orange flavors are a match made in heaven.

Yes, wine in quotations, because this smells, looks, and tastes so much like a mulled wine, but is a completely alcohol free version! Honestly, sometimes I can’t decide if the incredible citrus and spice aroma or the taste of this recipe is better, but either way, all of your senses will be very happy you made this. The pomegranate juice and balsamic vinegar really replicate the fruity, acidity of red wine, and the star anise, cinnamon, and orange flavors are a match made in heaven. A warm mug of this is the perfect way to end a chilly Thanksgiving night!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • 4 cups unsweetened pomegranate juice
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 small oranges washed and sliced into 8 wheels, divided
  • 20 whole cloves
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise pods
  • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar

Instructions

  • In a medium sauce pot over high heat, add pomegranate juice, sugar, 4 slices of orange, cloves, cinnamon sticks and star anise pods. Stir to combine and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a low simmer and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once the flavors have married, remove from heat and add balsamic vinegar. Stir to combine.
  • To serve, ladle the drink evenly into 4 mugs or heat proof glasses. Be careful to avoid whole spices when ladling. Top each with a slice of orange and serve immediately. If desired for those over the age of 21, add 1 ½ ounces of dark rum to each glass.
